Resurrection and Mobility: Build William's Combat Loop
A source-backed Valor Mortis guide to William's resurrection, parries, dashes, grapple, wall run, swings, and supernatural positioning tools.
Last verified · Official
Valor Mortis is built around a deliberate contradiction: William is a soldier pulled back from death, but the game expects him to move aggressively through first-person soulslike fights. Official developer material ties his resurrection and supernatural abilities to nephtoglobin, and names grapple, wall run, swing, dash, block, parry, and finishers across the store page and updates.
This guide turns those confirmed verbs into one preparation loop. It does not assume the final retail stamina, cooldown, damage, or upgrade values.
The official movement-combat relationship
One More Level describes William’s nephtoglobin connection as enabling him to grapple through the air, wall run across cliffs, swing across wide expanses, and manipulate terrain to reach combat vantage points. The Steam page also lists parry, block, dash, and finishers among the game’s combat actions.
The useful conclusion is not “always stay in the air.” It is that movement is meant to change the angle of an encounter. A safe route can become an attack route, and a broken bridge can be a combat problem as well as a traversal problem.
Use a three-phase encounter loop
1. Read the arena
Before attacking, identify an anchor, a wall-run surface, a retreat line, and the enemy that can punish a long animation. In the Demo’s Lighthouse material, a destroyed bridge and transmutation powers are explicitly used to cross broken terrain. Treat the arena’s geometry as part of the kit.
2. Break the rhythm
Use a parry or block when the enemy’s attack is readable. Use a dash or a grapple when the attack is not. The target-lock and camera improvements described by the developer were made for multi-enemy and boss situations, so retest your camera discipline when more than one enemy enters the fight.
3. Convert the opening
After a successful defensive exchange or a movement reposition, use a finisher only when its prompt and target state are confirmed. Do not assume every stagger is an execution window. Record the actual trigger in the release build.
Resurrection is not a permission to trade hits
The resurrection premise can make a player expect unlimited retries or an automatic safety net. The official sources do not publish how resurrection affects health, checkpoints, resources, or enemy state. Treat it as story and ability context until the system is tested. The safest habit remains avoiding damage, creating distance, and using movement to choose the next exchange.
Demo-tested context, clearly labelled
The free Demo contains a modified early section and a second Lighthouse level. Its official page and developer update name a Rapier, Musket, and new Shield Transmutation in that expanded level. These are useful demonstrations of the design direction, but Demo availability does not prove that handling, stats, or unlock timing will be identical in the retail game.
Launch-day notes to capture
- Does grapple require a marked anchor or free aim?
- Does wall running consume a resource or use only geometry?
- What is the input relationship between block, parry, and dash?
- Which enemy states allow a finisher?
- Does resurrection change the checkpoint, arena, or inventory state?
- Which movement powers are available immediately and which are gated?
Until those answers are verified, the traversal and cast page covers the official movement wording, while the Demo boss guide is the appropriate place for tested Demo encounter details.
